Revisiting a region I used to know, we were taken by surprise by the transition the old Ruffy Store has undergone. Gone is the local supplies store- replaced with a gorgeous oasis in the rocky Strathbogie highlands. Home made food was wonderful, accompanied by local wines, especially sitting outside under the flowering crab apple with the old Border Collie for company! A perfect way to to break the trip.

The Ruffy Produce Store was strongly recommended to me by our host. It is up in the Strathbogies, quite a drive from -- well, pretty much anywhere. The store is essentially a cafe that also sells produce (wine, cheese, pastry). The setting is comfortable, with plenty of space, but not much character. You need to book on weekends! We were lucky to get a table. Very nice coffee. The food was nice enough, but very expensive ($17 for a small slice of quiche with some lettuce leaves). The owner was very friendly, but the other staff were not terribly competent (soup arrived without a spoon).
