Base Backpackers St Kilda

Base Backpackers is by far the best Hostel I've ever come across! Every night there is something going on in the bar and the staff are just amazing! They will do anything to ensure you have a good time. Even my 55 year old mother throughly enjoyed her stay at base and would definitely do it again on her next trip to Melbourne!

BASE ROCKS!!! Best party hostel ever! I loved Boozy Bingo as well it was very funniest.

Twice they lost my booking e-mails containing credit card information, and once I called they were rather rude, and said I should have called instead of e-mailing them. Problem is, when you try to book their packages online you are send automatically to an e-mail formula.. I have not felt safe doing this booking!

If you're going to spend this kind of money on accommodation, spend it in Habitat HQ, a stones throw from Base. The name of the game in base is "bleed 'em dry". If they see a chance to cut a corner to make a cent they'll do it. The worst I saw in my time there was the management training new bar staff to underpour as much as possible to increase profit (I am speaking from personal experience), which is shameful considering you are paying full bar prices for a drink. Their door staff are thugs and don't expect to get any sleep on busy nights if noise through walls keeps you awake. Facilities are ok, you've got your pool table, big t.v. room and lockers. Upsides are, the bathrooms and linen are clean, reception staff lovely and it is bright, the travel desk is good too.

This is the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. I have just been sent outside by the militant security who manage the club associated with the hostel. The head bouncer prances around the club as if he's looking for a fight. He singled me out, accused me of being drunk and made me leave the premises. I tried to explain that I'd only had a couple of beers, but he threatened me. I also am staying at the premises - can you believe that -kicked out of your own accommodation for being drunk, even though I wasn't. I managed to get to get back in after talking with the management of the hostel, but they backed the Nazi bouncer and said that I had to stay in my room or else they would kick me out. Imagine that - sent to your bedroom. Talk about the nanny state!. I also witnessed the same bouncer assault one of the patrons of the bar who was dressed up in fancy dress - for no apparent reason. And as I write, I witness a sober Englishman being kicked out for being drunk. Ridiculous!
