Canberra Rex Hotel

We have just returned from Canberra and spent 3 nights at the Rex Hotel, and before we left Adelaide we saw many very negative reviews of the Rex Hotel, and this concerned us very much, but we are here to tell everyone that we had a fantastic stay there, we had a lovely clean room and didn't want for a thing, if we asked for anything , we got it, and the room was serviced each day, and coffee and tea etc replenished, also toiletries too. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, especially Rachel who took the time to print out our boarding passed for us, a cheerful bubbly lovely young lady and also Selina who helped us with our luggage, and Selina don't forget "Lilliput Lane"cottages !! she will understand this !!! Breakfast each morning was fantastic, and well cooked and lots of variety, a great hotel, great service and also we enjoyed Canberra very much especially Floriade which was main reason for going, so if we are in Canberra again we will certainly book into the Rex and also the bus stop is only a short walk from the hotel and so easy to get around from there. Thanks Rex Hotel !!!!

Old and dated. Give it a miss

Absolutely disgusted with the cleanliness of the room. The bath was filthy, had a black ring around the bottom, the sink was only held on by the taps. No hot water most of the time, when it did come on it was as if someone was turning another tap on and off. I dealt with all then went to go to bed and found the blanket and underside of the bedspread had some sort of dried clumpy brown matter in several places. As it was late at night and I was too tired to call room service I slept with just a sheet in the middle of a Canberra winter with an air conditioner that didnt work properly and was terribly noisy. I informed reception the next morning (as we were staying two nights). Room service left a note on our return to say they had bleached the bath but it was old and stained. Out of curiosity I used a tissue to rub at the stain and found it came away easily. When we went to the restaurant for the included buffet breakfast at 8.45am we were told it was full and to come back later which was impossible as we had appointments. I received no apology of any kind from reception and was treated quite abruptly. I emailed management on my return home and received no acknowledgement what so ever. This room cost $162.00 per night and I expected much more for my money. At the very least, clean linen!

Ok so the room is cheaper than most and you get a free buffet breakfast, but the price in this case certainly does reflect on the hotel. They say first impressions last, well when you drive up the main street and see a really old building, it doesn't inspire great confidence in the hotel. The lobby must have been recently renovated and is really very nice, as is the restaurant and the buffet breakfast. The staff are amazing, its just a shame they cant make miracles. The rooms are very old and, well i hate to say it, but they are a dive. The furniture is remminiscent of the 70s and 80s, though the beds were comfy and the facilities in the room are very basic. There was dust on the furniture. There is a balcony, that has a great view of the car park, has mould on the concrete floor and has no seats to sit down on. In fact a room for 3 people had only one chair. The bathroom was very squeezy and had not been updated in quite sometime. The non-smoking floor seemed to smell of smoke anyway the moment you stepped out of the elevator and into the corridor. The pool was again very old and not very nice, it was also quite small. If I had my time again, I don't think I would choose to stay here again, a bit of a shame as it was in a really good location.

The staff were friendly, thats probably the only good thing i can say about Rex. We had no hot water throughout our stay, The mirror came away from wall and there was mould behind it. The heater was really noisy and the lifts were not working and i asked a staff member where the stairs were and she said she did not know. We had to acsess our room through the staff lifts in horrible dirty corridors. I could keep going on but i think i have said enough. I will not stay there again!!
