I think the previous reviewer is being a little unfair. I too recently purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina display and yes the software was not up to date. You need to recognise that the computer has been manufactured at a much earlier date and software is being continually updated. Apple supply the updates free but you have to cover the downloading costs. My computer was stolen and recovered via Find My Mac and I need to reinstall the OS from scratch. I've contacted Apple support (as to download over my ADSL will take about 80 - 90 hours!!) and one option is to use an Apple supplied flash drive. (Not sure how available this option is. I think it is unreasonable to expect the reseller ( did you know resellers make very little profit when selling Apple stuff?) to cover the cost of downloading updates. I think if you take it to an actual Apple Store (Is it the Genius Bar?) rather than a reseller you may be able to get them to do it for you.
