It's the place my partner and I go for special occasions. Hearty classic 'real' home cooked Greek meals, great atmosphere, love the vintage posters on the walls. Have been at least 10 times and will always enjoy it.

I booked this 1 month in advanced, for 26/12/12 615pm we received a sms on the 26/12/12 545pm advising that they would be closed for boxing day. They completely ruined my family Christmas. I would not recommend this for anyone I have never been so angry and upset about service from a restaurant.

I had read several review (although not from Google) about Philhellene and was expecting great things. However, it took the kitchen three attempts to serve my main meal (Moussaka) to me warm. Attempt 1 and 2 were both stone cold in the middle. The third was quite warm - but still had a few cold spots. Third times a charm, right? The atmosphere was great - relaxed, cozy and not too noisy - it was very easy to hold a conversation. Our waiter looked stressed. She was very inattentive and did not smile once. Throughout the triple Moussaka mayhem, she didn't really seem that fussed. I observed the other waiters who seemed really nice - so perhaps she was just having a bad night. The Greek salad was another disappointment. Very few olives, a rather small piece of feta and a tonne of lettuce. Defiantly not worth $10.50. The highlight of the night was the Greek Yogurt Panna Cotta - topped with sugared rose petals. I have to say this is one of the best desserts I have eaten for several years. We later found out was made by one of the waiters, Philip Vakos - who my girlfriend recognised as a contestant from MasterChef. At the end of the night, our bill was $116. Had our waiter been more attentive it would have been more due to drinks! There was no discount offered for the mistake - so I reminded them of the experience without directly asking for a discount. They did then reduce the bill to $100. For the price and the poor Moussaka experience I would not return.

How disappointing. Our daughter organised for us to be taken to her 'favourite' Melbourne restaurant. Upon arrival ( with booking email in hand) she was told to 'go away for half an hour whilst a table was finishing her mains, as they had no record of her booking.' How embarrassing for her and we were totally unimpressed. After twenty minutes in a nearby wine bar we scooted across the street to Meltemi and was greeted warmly and was seated and served within minutes. What a wonderful atmosphere there at the Meltemi Tavern in preference to the Philhellen!! Good food, good service and great fun for a great price. I am sad to say that the Philhellene has now been taken off my daughter and her fiances' 'favourite Melbourne restaurant'. No offer of compensation, no consideration of the discomfort my daughter experienced after organising this night out for her northern NSW parents, weeks before, offered by the establishment. disgusting!!!! Unprofessional!!! Not good enough!!
